About the speaker

Richard Shenghua He

Independent GCP Data consultant with 4+ years’ experience designing and building GCP-based data platforms for the likes of Just Eat, Pearson and leading GCP Data & Analytics partner – Datatonic.

Q&A with the speaker:

What are the common problems when building these systems or growing a team in this area?

Richard: Focus around Software Engineering foundations, building frameworks and re-usable components not repeating.

How difficult is it to learn DBT or become an Analytics Engineer?

Richard: Focus around DBT is SQL based so typically analysts interested in more of an engineering way of working get into this role. DBT Cloud is browser based, so it’s easy to get started and you just have to learn version control.

What skills are required in this area to run these systems well?

Richard: Software Engineering skills and DevOps best practices.

At what stage should an organisation look into this area?

Richard: They must have a solid foundation with high quality ingested data and sufficient insight knowing what problem they are trying to solve with predictions.
